When life gives you lemons, throw this party

Sour that your family gatherings are less than magical? Want to become more intentional with your friends and family?

Write a seasonal bucket list

Do what we did - get your family members together and write a bucket list. Each season my daughters, nieces and nephews, parents, siblings, and their spouses huddle in the barn and brainstorm a list of projects, places, or activities that we have the itch to tackle.

The lemonade test One of the items on the summer bucket list that I wanted to tackle was to make the perfect cup of lemonade. I bought 3 different store-bought mixes and put those up against my homemade, squeezed-by-hand lemonade to see which concoction would get the most votes from our family.

Ingredients Some of the pixie dust I used to make the lemonade taste test magical is listed below:

  • The Kids: Engage the younger folks - they loved being involved in the planning and setting up.

  • Voting: Determine your voting structure, we used fun sticker words I snagged from the dollar store. Family members put the corresponding sticker with their favorite cup of lemonade.

  • Tasting: I bought plastic little shot glasses so everyone could taste each lemonade. Yes, bought 24 in a pack from the Dollar Store.

  • Decor: Use yellow decorations that go with your desired vibe. I wanted an old-timey, nostalgic vibe, so I displayed lemon head candy in an old jar, black and white checked towels that adorned family sayings, yellow table cloths, and a variety of other knick knacks. Additionally, we used fresh lemon verbena that I had grown in a container garden on my back porch.

  • Music: We created a lemonade playlist with songs about lemonade and old-timey songs to enhance the magical moment.

  • Cleanup: Make sure you have towels for spills, wipes for sticky hands, and trash cans to throw away the tasting cups.

Below are a few photos from this bucket list event. At your next family outing, try the lemonade taste test and see what inspires your family's tastebuds. Being intentional is sure to sweeten up your family memories.
